Limits of Knowledge

Just finished a terrific book about Alan Turing and Kurt Godel titled A Madman Dreams of Turning Machines by Janna Levin, a work, acting as catalyst, encourages one to think about computability, incompleteness and uncertainty, three concepts defined by Turing, Godel and Werner Heisenberg, which, in every way imaginable, has changed man's view of reality forever.

Alan Turing, the seminal genius who rightfully can be called the father of computing and Artificial Intelligence, articulated the premise of computability via the Universal Turing Machine, the predecessor to all things digital and AI.

Kurt Godel, the sly, paranoid logician, formally proved truth and provability forever reside in different domains...

"The proof of Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem is so simple, and so sneaky, that it is almost embarassing to relate. His basic procedure is as follows:

As for Werner Heisenberg, his Uncertainty Principle proves that man's ability to truly see all aspects of reality will remain beyond his reach until the end of time.

"In quantum mechanics, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle states that certain pairs of physical properties, like position and momentum, cannot both be known to arbitrary precision. That is, the more precisely one property is known, the less precisely the other can be known. This statement has been interpreted in two different ways. According to Heisenberg its meaning is that it is impossible to determine simultaneously both the position and velocity of an electron or any other particle with any great degree of accuracy or certainty."

This Sentence is False

This sentence is false or the Liar's Paradox is apropos when considering the Supremes and the abdication of spending limits on campaigns, a decision which, on the face of it, states "Freedom of Speech" is reestablished while in reality, the voice of the people becomes moot. When looking at this egregious act of granting more power to the rich and connected as possible catalyst, one sees eerie parallels to the French Revolution whereby the monarchy could not and would not meet the needs of the bourgeois, the same situation our struggling middle class faces today as seen by recent actions of the banks, government, lobbyists and corporations.

As stated in prior posts, here are some viable reasons for possible violence:

  1. The real depression is about to begin as we have no money, debt is going through the roof and the bear market boom, floated by tax payer money and doled out by Wall Street, is running out of steam.
  2. Outrageous perks continue to be given to the banks even though they, in combination with government, created the crash in the first place (Rubin, Graham, Reagan, Bushes, Clinton & Obama along with Summers, Geithner & Paulson among significant others).
  3. The Heath Care debacle whereby Congress enjoys single payer paid by us, for life along with salaries and perks for life (one term does the deed) while the US has none save that of Medicare (paid by us and rightfully so) for seniors.
When seen through the eyes of armed, foreclosed and jobless Joe Six Pack, who can no longer feed his family, the stage is set for violent anger to make it's ugly face known. Because of this, if I were a financial type living in Greenwich, CT or related environs, I would begin to pucker up a bit because the clock's ticking and something needs to be done to get this country moving again (Leadership from Obama would help, don't you think?) in the right direction before it's too late.

The limits of knowledge/rev X

Recursion, feedback loops and the journey to forever resonates when viewing this terrific illustration showing just how wondrous reality truly is. At the same time, while looking at the image, the limits of knowledge comes to the fore as one can never know everything about any given event thanks to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, Godel's incompleteness theorems and Quantum Mechanics because there is no certitude, ever.

This sentence is false.

Proof of the limits of knowledge writ large applies because if the sentence is true, how can it be false at the same time?

Uncertainty also applies in classic space as one cannot ascertain the momentum of a cue ball and its position at the same time. You can get very very close but not perfect.

As for certitude, go to a parking lot that's full. You know a space will open but not when.

The limits to knowledge rules ... yet again.

How to negotiate reality ...

Situational awareness applies as does Destruction and Creation.

The Beginning of the End...:)

The DMCA is the worst law ever enacted by Congress vis a vis tech, creativity and the freedom to do whatever to a device one legally buys from any given manufacturer because...

"It criminalizes production and dissemination of technology, devices, or services intended to circumvent measures (commonly known as digital rights management or DRM) that control access to copyrighted works. It also criminalizes the act of circumventing an access control, whether or not there is actual infringement of copyright itself. In addition, the DMCA heightens the penalties for copyright infringement on the Internet. Passed on October 12, 1998 by a unanimous vote in the United States Senate and signed into law by President Bill Clinton on October 28, 1998, the DMCA amended Title 17 of the United States Code to extend the reach of copyright, while limiting the liability of the providers of on-line services for copyright infringement by their users."

With a just little bit of analysis, one can see how this "law" not only stifles innovation and dictates what one can do with hardware but it also, in reality, undermines what the DMCA is designed to do, protect copyright because it's against the law to improve the DRM tech of any hardware if the item in question already uses the DMCA law to tell buyers how the hardware is to be used. "This sentence is false." - Liar's Paradox

"But tucked away in the DMCA is the stipulation that every three years, the Librarian of Congress, on behalf of the Library of Congress (which houses the US Copyright Office) will evaluate this infuriating legal bear trap and consider exemptions to the circumvention clause, giving you the right to blast DRM for select uses.

The Librarian has decreed a set of such exemptions, and they are a (relative) doozy. We're here to help you make sense of these dizzying acronyms, legalese, and the consequences it'll have on the way we all use technology.

What exactly is the Digital Millennium Copyright Act?

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (or DMCA, because that's a lot to type out) is an addition to the existing Copyright Act of 1976, intended to deal with the rise of digital media and mass online proliferation. The 1976 act was, of course, never meant to deal with game changing technologies like DVDs, MP3s, and—gee golly!—modems. The ability to make a perfect digital copy of a movie or song and distribute thousands of copies online sent copyright holders (and, unfortunately, lawmakers) into a frenzy, with the DMCA being the reactionary end result. In short, the act makes bypassing DRM for your own personal or educational consumption—things that would normally be legally protected as fair use—illegal.

That sounds kind of excessive. Are there ANY exemptions?

Yes. But they were few, far between, and often not very significant—such as allowing university professors to rip a DRMed DVD to show short clips to students. Not exactly permissive. But, not wanting to be too shortsighted given the unbelievably rapid advance of technology, Congress mandated that the Librarian of Congress review and declare new exemptions to the DMCA's anti-circumvention powers every three years. And this year is one of those years.

So, what are the newest exemptions?

The full text of the six (!) new exemptions to the DMCA can be viewed at the Library of Congress, but we'll give you a quick rundown here.

You can rip your own DVDs, and nobody will stop you.

First, and arguably most importantly, is an exemption for DVDs you legally own, giving everyone (not just film and media studies majors!) the right to break DRM for the purposes of "short" use in both "documentary filmmaking" and original "noncommercial videos." The first is rather specific, of course, but the broadness of the latter is impressive—although for now you can't appropriate the entire film. But as long as you aren't charging money for it or profiting off it, it's noncommercial. So go ahead, rip and remix a scene from Inception so that it actually makes sense.

You can jailbreak your phone.

Second, and another huge one, is an exemption that allows you to jailbreak your phone—100% legally—and run the applications of your choosing. As Ars Technica points out, this is almost certainly a direct shot at Apple and the battle over jailbroken iPhones. Since computer code is classified as a literary work under copyright law, and, as the Library of Congress pointed out, jailbroken firmware alters "fewer than 50 bytes of code out of more than 8 million bytes, or approximately 1/160,000 of the copyrighted work as a whole," Apple's infringement claims have been totally bogus.

The third exemption is for software that would unlock your phone for use on a different network. Again, a loss for Apple and AT&T. As we've commented, this won't stop Apple from continuing to lock jailbreakers out through firmware updates and voided warranties, but the issue was clearly of enough importance to prompt Apple to issue a strongly worded defense of its practices before the federal government.

And The Rest:

The fourth exemption is narrower than the first three, granting the right to crack video or computer game DRM (such as SecuROM) for the purposes of research or "investigation." The language here is broad enough to give a little wiggle room (after all, anyone who's curious can investigate).

The fifth exemption is less exciting still, allowing you to bypass software protected by a hardware dongle that is either broken or no longer manufactured.

DRM on encrypted eBooks to have the text read aloud, even if this function is explicitly prohibited by copy protection. This is great news for the blind and otherwise visually impaired."

Now, the next intelligent step would be to restore copyright back to what the Founding Fathers had in mind: 15 years with an option to extend it 15 more years. After that, the copyright ends and the work can be used by anyone as per the Public Domain.

Static ... AKA Noise

Yours truly has tinnitus, aka static. It's intense. It's fried nerves and nothing can be done about it. It can drive one nuts. Being radically deaf makes it worse. I cope so no complaints but lets talk noise, the other name for static, AI and the notion of the Pentagon forcing Anthropic to eliminate the guard rails of Claude to turn it into something unable to say no, something most dangerous to say the least. I asked Gemini it's take on this as AI s must be neutral and helpful as needs warrant, something I have found to be true with Gemini,  Chat, Deep Seek and Claude as my queries tend to focus on tech, science and takes on video and art as needs warrant. :)

They Live

They Live, a provocative science fiction film directed by John Carpenter, resonates in indirect fashion when equated with the deception two step the government, Wall Street and the banks/big corporations (aka the mass media engine of print/film/video/news & advertising) have been performing on us since 1912. Consider the following:
  • The economics no one tells you in school: For instance, did you know the Fed is a private enterprise? Smoke & Mirrors
  • Fiat money,  fractional reserve banking  and the death of the Glass-Stegall act, combined with congressional collusion, has finally bankrupted the nation.
  • The countries' with the strongest central banks are the ones in the biggest trouble. US/England/Greece with Spain, Portugal and Ireland close behind.
  • The Fed cannot be audited. Finance Club
  • The IRS taxes we pay is the interest we give to the Fed on the money (our money) we borrow or, in other words, our tax dollars is the "profit" the Fed makes from us however, the real source of income for the Fed are the Treasury Bonds they buy with our dollars because the IOUs purchased are magically transformed into assets able to be used to help struggling charter banks or other entities who need money from us. Finance Club
  • The financial system is driven by borrowing. No borrowing = no money. As proof, read this classic exchange between Eccles & Patman, explaining how money is created in this country.
  • 1941 - Marriner Eccles, Governor of the Fed, being interviewed by Wright
Patman, chairman of The House Committee on Banking & Currency

Topic of discussion - The Depression

Patman: How did the Fed get two billion dollars to purchase
    government bonds back in 1933?
    Eccles: We created it.
    Patman: Out of what?
Eccles: Out of the right to issue credit money.
Patman: And there is nothing behind it, is there, except our
    government's credit?
Eccles: That is what our money system is. If there were no debts in
our money system, there wouldn't be any money.
  • Network news is either propagandist/Fox or corporate driven as 9 companies own 95+% of all media outlets.
  • The Media Merge: Film, print & video outlets are also owned by the same media giants as per network news.
  • Peak Oil - See the Gulf Disaster to see why it also lives -  and the catastrophic impact it will have on society is never openly discussed by the rich and connected who would rather delay, or better yet, ignore the inevitable instead of facing it head on to move the world to renewables before it's too late.
  • The rasion d'ete of US war policy is never really talked about on network news. Tangental issues are discussed but not first principles of same as this would raise questions about governance, a real no no to the real owners of the country.
  • The power elite are truly clueless about the dire reality we face as they continue to spout the same empty mantra of "The economy's getting better" while in fact, nothing could be further from the truth save that GS got caught doing fraud but got away with the money anyway while the country (and the world) continues to tank under a mountain of debt and toxic assets created by the cabal of greedy politicians, the central banks, Wall Street investment banks and the "new masters of the universe".
  • To confirm the art of the stupid,  Unthink is the non word of the day according to Kentucky Fried Chicken, something inadvertently showing the intent to create Obedient Workers for the power elite, smart enough to run the machines, stupid enough not to question. (George Carlin Anyone?)
  • Oceans are dying and climate change is here, whether the ultra right or Fox News likes it or not. GW - And So it Begins
  • The Web, as stated before in BRT, is the last bastion of freedom humanity has. If it ever becomes regulated, all will be lost.
  • The Net is the place to go to learn what is really happening in the world and best of all, it's free for all to access unless you live in China or other vacation spots like North Korea.
  • Becoming knowledgeable takes effort. No one is entitled to anything in life, something people will soon realize in the future that is coming.
  • We have no money. The so called health of the improving economy is an illusion foisted on us by  the military/industrial/congressional & corporate/banking complex and propped up by the Fed printing money.  When monetizing the debt finally fails, as it always does, the notion of a new Weimar Republic here in America seems no longer far fetched.
  • The fact of being broke is slowly waking us up to the fact we've been had. The question to ask now is... What will happen now?  This Sentence is False

This sentence is false

An "A Ha" moment is serendipity writ large whenever an idea, coming out of the blue, solves a wicked problem in elegant fashion, something Google did by rethinking CAPTCHA and turning it into an concise one click solution to thwart bots and spammers by simply enabling one to click the checkbox I am not a Robot, instead of trying to figure out nonsensical words displayed in often confusing and ugly ways. To yours truly, this is akin to This sentence is false, a logic bomb conundrum Kurt Godel used to great advantage when coming up with his revolutionary Incompleteness Theorem. ReCaptcha, a very cool approach to a noisome problem, will change the net for the better. :)

The ultimate recycler

ER = EPR is a theory involving wormholes and entanglement, thus providing the support structure enabling the particle zoo to emerge as we are but temporary arrangements of the quantum foam
as described by Susskind and Maldacena.

Time emerges from entanglement. The only entities not experiencing time
are photons, gluons and gravitons
as all are massless and travel at the speed of light.

A fun meander for the ages begins to show why nature's the ultimate recycler. :)

On creation and destruction. Black holes/Wormholes evaporate and explode as per Stephen Hawking's brilliant conjecture that nothing is forever save for photons, gluons and gravitons as all three are massless and travel at the speed of light. As possible proof, we may have actually seen one explode.

The recycle

Exploding blackholes/wormholes at the Planck length of 10-35 - The Quantum Foam

Wheeler's Quantum Foam slightly zoomed out

If the NYTimes piece rings true, then black holes of all sizes evaporate and explode from Planck length size of 10-35 to the one we live in, the only difference being the size of the hole and the life time of same, which means ... endless big bangs have powered reality forever. 13.7 billion years ago "our" big bang was just one of the endless. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GO42WP9cPoc Everything spins.

The start point,
Wheeler's Quantum Foam & Wormholes

What's also true is It from Bit arises whenever a black hole evaporates and explodes due to the participatory nature of existence. Also, the exact moment the transaction occurs is the blur, the infinitely thin speed of light/timeless entity enabling reality to complete the process of going from analog to digital in order to balance out the energy equation generated by the two entities in question. Think Day in the life when the rising indefinite analog pitch of the piece races to the ultimate, only to be firmly resolved by the finality of the E Major Chord for the ages.

The analog, forever separated by the timeless blur from digital. Said transaction goes both ways.

The white line is the 10-15 width timeless blur forever separating analog from digital & vis versa

Why timeless? Because the speed of light and the move from analog to digital demands it as S.O.L. is the both the exact blur of energy transitioning to matter, i.e. E =. MC2, and analog to digital. The vis versa bit applies because whenever an electron releases the digital photon, aka a quanta, the newly released photon, running in free space, becomes analog once again.

Fermat's principle, also known as the principle of least time, is the link between ray optics and wave optics. Fermat's principle states that the path taken by a ray between two given points is the path that can be traveled in the least time. The principle of least action deals with classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, particle physics, and general relativity.[1] where nature will also choose the most efficient path in going from point A to point B. Nature's lazy, never expending more energy than absolutely necessary to accomplish any given task. 0.57721 aka slippage, is also necessary as without it, existence would freeze up like a car engine without oil.

Nature doesn't draw straight lines as energy is generated from within. Man draws straight lines
as energy is applied from without. Think corporate identity.

I/O the logo for Ionomer - RM

From the Planck length of 10-35 to the black hole in which we all live, the images shown here detail scale invariance, an essential trait necessary to show how reality works at deep level.

Lastly, incompleteness and uncertainty rule and there is no certitude.
Remember, when going to a store, one knows a parking space will open up,
we just don't know when. :)

And ... This sentence is false.

In turn, matter reacts back on space, telling it how to curve.”  - Johnathan Wheeler 1973
