The eyes have it

The eyes have it, especially if you are a barreleye fish (Macropinna microstoma) a species complete with a transparent head and tubular green eyes able to rotate 90 degrees from vertical to horizontal used
in its endless search for prey.

Presbyopia

If you look closely at this infrared image on the left side, you will see houses slightly out of focus, not because yours truly screwed up in taking the shot but rather how infrared wavelengths drift out of focus from time to time with lenses & cameras keyed to visible light. Now consider looking at a computer screen or smartphone for 8 hours to see how out of focus eyes can permanently become given just how intense screens on said devices tend to be in the year of our lord 2018.

But there is a common sense remedy to this.

Yours truly does the 20-20-20 rule to the max even though my eyes vis a vis close up vision crapped out years ago due to age but with that being said, said vision has not gotten any worse looking at screens of all sizes beginning in the late 70's of B&W 80 character displays, courtesy Perkin Elmer, creating fine art 3D graphics on the MAGI system using Fortran 77 as the weapon of choice to create said art in question. :)

Jumpers ... rule :)

Yours truly loves these little guys. Enchanting, funny and vanishingly quick, these tiny entities never cease to amaze and now, scientists are learning how these incredible creatures view their world.

360 anyone?

Jumpers ... rule. :)

Addendum:: They're smart as hell as well. :)

The eyes have it/Rev II

The eyes have it - Rev 1, is pretty extensive as the notion of sight is rather interesting because the instrument enabling it to happen first appeared in the Ediacaran over 555 million years ago.

Why all this palaver? Well, it seems front loading applies when the entity in question sees something interesting to investigate, in this case, a person calculating 2 + 2 = 4 by starting the calc when seeing the first number before the calculation is finished because priming the pump of thinking is necessary before doing anything of consequence, something nearly all life forms do when dealing with the vagaries of reality.

To whit.

Now think a lioness going after a zebra. The processing is not arithmetic, it's dinner. Her pupils will dilate while doing the calc of how to get the zebra. This amazing research relates to how all life tackles problems as the eyes have it without question. :)

Foundation's Edge

When looking at this outrageous tech whereby ordinary objects like door knobs, sofas and water could become smart, Isaac Ashmov's Foundation's Edge comes to mind whereby starships were controlled by hands, something somewhat akin to but, in actuality, far beyond the realm of Minority Report even though this work was written over 30 years ago.

Foundation's Edge - The Avatar of touch.

Hesitantly Trevize placed a finger on the circle of light and at once the light spread out to cover
the desk top. On it were the outline of two hands: a right and a left. With a sudden, smooth movement, the desk top tilted to an angle of forty-five degrees.
Trevize took the seat before the desk. No words were necessary. It was clear what he was expected
to do.
He placed his hands on the outlines on the desk, which were positioned for him to do so without
strain. The desk top seemed soft, nearly velvety, where he touched it--and his hands sank in.
He stared at his hands with astonishment, for they had not sunk in at all. They were on the surface,
his eyes told him. Yet to his sense of touch it was as though the desk surface had given way, and as though something were holding his hands softly and warmly.
 Was that all?
 Now what?
He looked about and then closed his eyes in response to a suggestion.
He had heard nothing. He had heard nothing!
But inside his brain, as though it were a vagrant thought of his own, there was the sentence,
“Please close your eyes. Relax. We will make connection.”
 Through the hands?
Somehow Trevize had always assumed that if one were going to communicate by thought with a
computer, it would be through a hood placed over the head and with electrodes against the eyes and skull.
 The hands?
But why not the hands? Trevize found himself floating away, almost drowsy, but with no loss of
mental acuity. Why not the hands?
The eyes were no more than sense organs. The brain was no more than a central switchboard,
encased in bone and removed from the working surface of the body. It was the hands that were the working surface, the hands that felt and manipulated the Universe.

Any Questions?

In the blink of an eye

The coolest eyes on the planet belong to the ferocious Mantis Shrimp, a carnivore supreme possessing stun gun weapons in the form of two heavily modified claws able to modify prey via pulverization or knockout depending on the base configuration of said prey. Seen below is a side shot of this most fearsome predator.

Seen below is Ze Frank's over the top description of interesting facts about this amazing animal.

ISpy - The 5 Eyes

Nations spy on each other 24/7 but listening to the disinformation bandied about in the three debates, it seems the US is portrayed as Lilly white and perfect while the Russians are cast as nefarious players all too ready to game the election for Trump by means of hacking, something rather questionable given the fact we do the same to Russia but Russia, being a mafia state, never divulges anything when the US does the deed when it negatively impacts Russia, particularly on the political side of things. As often stated in BRT, this piece is not about Hillary and the Donald but rather about the 5 Eyes, Australia, the US, England, New Zealand and Canada an alliance founded after WWII, that spies on the world 24/7.

15 seconds ...

Quantum mechanics proves beyond a shadow of a doubt there is no certitude. When researchers delve into the notion of superposition, reality itself becomes questionable at best, something in concert with how our eyes and brain keep us from going truly live in an existence we will never fully understand.

Everything You See Is From 15 Seconds in the Past, New Research Claims

And that's probably the reason why our vision doesn't constantly make us throw up.

"Instead of analysing every single visual snapshot, we perceive in a given moment an average of what we saw in the past 15 seconds," the authors note in a piece published in The Conversation, a website where scientists routinely detail their latest work. "So, by pulling together objects to appear more similar to each other, our brain tricks us into perceiving a stable environment. Living 'in the past' can explain why we do not notice subtle changes that occur over time."

As the researchers put it in their paper:

Retinal images continuously fluctuate because of many sources of internal and external noise ranging from retinal image motion, occlusions and discontinuities, lighting changes, and perspective changes, among many other sources of noise. However, the objects do not appear to jitter, fluctuate, or change identity from moment to moment.

As an experiment, track your finger with your eyes, notice how smooth the motion is. Now, try to move your eyes without tracking something. Not smooth is it? This is something yours truly has noticed for years but never knew why this is so until now. :)

The image below shows why certitude is but an illusion.

Not just for the 3rd world

Knowing just how overpriced medical hardware tends to be in America's profit-driven healthcare system gives one pause but there's hope, especially when talented scientists work with innovative techs to create inexpensive and elegantly designed hardware that makes a difference, as seen by this very cool CerviScope,  developed by David Walmer and Duke's biomedical engineering group.

How cool is this? :)

Zenith & Nadir - Opposites to the Extreme

As seen in the diagram, Zenith is the direct opposite of Nadir, the definitions of which most certainly apply for two postings, one being inspired research, the other, political follies of the highest order.

The zenith part of this piece centers on eyes, wavelength of light and heath courtesy of the NY Times, Aging of Eyes Is Blamed for Range of Health Woes

To whit:

Now the Nadir:

One can only imagine the end result of such folly.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

A different kind of meander :)

Quanta Magazine is a gem. Science for the rest of us, particularly physics, warms the cockles of yours truly's heart, especially when it comes to the mysterious connect between order and disorder, a subject that never ceases to amaze given just how profound the connect truly is. With this in mind, the eyes of birds have an interesting tale to tell with it's indirect link to random walks, chaos and close packing, commonplace phenomena that show the inner workings of reality in subtle and interesting ways.

Random Walk

Chaos - Lorenz attractor aka The butterfly effect

Close packing of cannon balls

When this notion of unordered yet uniform distribution is connected to the universality of phase transitions and the permutations of randomness, a more comprehensive view of reality emerges.

Mandelbrot would get this research without question.

"Will you walk into my parlour?"

The whirlwind, the impact of AI on business, is just that. Everything's in play and business is having difficulties integrating this tech into complex operations. At the same time, a poem of delicious irony applies.

The subscription service model apples as per the service, when software is "purchased",
you don't own the code, you own THE RIGHT TO USE IT.

The same applies to AI but ...

The employees using AI are conveniently being replaced, bit by bit as AI learns via pattern recognition and stores the acquired data in question so the inherent knowledge of said corporation goes away when the employees are let go with the end result ... the corporation is saddled with a subscription service they don't own and a knowledge space they no longer have.

The Spider and the Fly (1829)

"Will you walk into my parlour?" said the Spider to the Fly,
"'Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I have many curious things to shew when you are there."
"Oh no, no," said the little Fly, "to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair can ne'er come down again."

"I'm sure you must be weary, dear, with soaring up so high;
Will you rest upon my little bed?" said the Spider to the Fly.
"There are pretty curtains drawn around; the sheets are fine and thin,
And if you like to rest awhile, I'll snugly tuck you in!"
"Oh no, no," said the little Fly, "for I've often heard it said,
They never, never wake again, who sleep upon your bed!"

Said the cunning Spider to the Fly, "Dear friend what can I do,
To prove the warm affection I've always felt for you?
I have within my pantry, good store of all that's nice;
I'm sure you're very welcome–will you please to take a slice?"
"Oh no, no," said the little Fly, "kind sir, that cannot be,
I've heard what's in your pantry, and I do not wish to see!"

"Sweet creature!" said the Spider, "you're witty and you're wise,
How handsome are your gauzy wings, how brilliant are your eyes!
I've a little looking-glass upon my parlour shelf,
If you'll step in one moment, dear, you shall behold yourself."
"I thank you, gentle sir," she said, "for what you're pleased to say,
And bidding you good morning now, I'll call another day."

The Spider turned him round about, and went into his den,
For well he knew the silly Fly would soon come back again:
So he wove a subtle web, in a little corner sly,
And set his table ready, to dine upon the Fly.
Then he came out to his door again, and merrily did sing,
"Come hither, hither, pretty Fly, with the pearl and silver wing;
Your robes are green and purple–there's a crest upon your head;
Your eyes are like the diamond bright, but mine are dull as lead!"

Alas, alas! how very soon this silly little Fly,
Hearing his wily, flattering words, came slowly flitting by;
With buzzing wings she hung aloft, then near and nearer drew,
Thinking only of her brilliant eyes, and green and purple hue–
Thinking only of her crested head–poor foolish thing! At last,
Up jumped the cunning Spider, and fiercely held her fast.
He dragged her up his winding stair, into his dismal den,
Within his little parlour–but she ne'er came out again!

And now dear little children, who may this story read,
To idle, silly flattering words, I pray you ne'er give heed:
Unto an evil counsellor, close heart and ear and eye,
And take a lesson from this tale, of the Spider and the Fly.
