So begins the mystery of intelligence as the story is improbable. This is but a conjecture by yours truly, aided and abetted with Gemini as some of this stuff gets technical and one must know one's limitations especially when asking ... What is the nature of intelligence? For this writer, the focus centers on physics, the principle of least action and the fact nature's lazy and reuses her ideas over and over again as energy, as stated in the laws of thermodynamics, cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed. 

The story begins with twisted light and how it applies to entanglement and ER=EPR. 

To whit.

A new room-temperature quantum device uses twisted light to entangle photons and electrons, overcoming one of the biggest hurdles in quantum technology. The breakthrough could pave the way for smaller, cheaper quantum systems with applications ranging from secure communications to future AI and computing platforms.

The device combines a thin patterned layer of molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) with a nanopatterned silicon substrate. Molybdenum diselenide belongs to a family of materials known as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), which are valued for their unique optical and quantum properties.

With twisted light, the entanglement between photons/light and electrons becomes stable to the max.

Back in 2012, yours truly talked about time, entanglement and the quantum foam in a piece titled Entanglement, the Link to Forever, stating that time may be a temporary arrangement of the quantum foam as said foam would be timeless but artifacts like protons, neutrons and sub atomic particles coming out of it would be but temporary arrangements of the QF, thus experiencing the notion of time. Well, it seems researchers far more versed that moi have expressed the same concept indirectly referencing the brilliant ER=EPR conjecture created by
  Leonard Susskind and Juan Maldacena in 2013.[3] 

They proposed that a wormhole (Einstein–Rosen bridge or ER bridge) is equivalent to a pair of maximally entangled black holes. EPR refers to quantum entanglement (EPR paradox).

The symbol is derived from the first letters of the surnames of authors who wrote the first paper on wormholes (Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen)[4] and the first paper on entanglement (Einstein, Boris Podolsky and Rosen).[5] The two papers were published in 1935, but the authors did not claim any connection between the concepts.[2]

ER = EPR is a conjecture in physics stating that two entangled particles (a so-called Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen or EPR pair) are connected by a wormhole (or Einstein–Rosen bridge)[1][2] and is thought by some to be a basis for unifying general relativity and quantum mechanics into a theory of everything.[1]

The kicker ...

The authors pushed this conjecture even further by claiming any entangled pair of particles—even particles not ordinarily considered to be black holes, and pairs of particles with different masses or spin, or with charges which aren't opposite—are connected by Planck scale wormholes.

If so, the lifetimes of  Planck scale wormholes would be incredibly short, thus giving rise to how reality works at deep level so the question to ask is ... does the quantum foam consist of wormholes operating under the dictates of the ER = EPR conjecture as articulated by Leonard Susskind and Juan Maldacena because if so, the existence of wormholes becomes scale invariant able to exist from the very tiny with lifetimes infinitesimally small to the ultra massive lasting trillions of years as needs warrant. How does this relate to microtubuels? Because they are tiny and ... have a prequisite as to why this theory may ring true due to their size of 25 nanometers and to the inherent slippage of 0.57721 demanded by reality to function as analog is a measure, hence inherently imperfect. 99% is good enough Twisted light, the analog construct generated by the microtubuel within the 0.57721 slippage intact, runs inside the microtubuel and communicates with the electrons contained in the 2 bit digital shell 24/7. 

Cytoskeleton proteins are a vital part of eukaryotic cells.
Researchers have now found similar proteins in Asgard archaea.

Scientists have identified tubulin structures in primitive 

Asgard archea that may have been the precursor of our own cellular skeletons.

Which means ... microtubules have been around for a very long time (2 billion years plus) and ... they are tiny. 25 nanometers, 4000 times smaller then a human hair, which means ... there are countless numbers of these entities residing in every cell residing in Eukaryotic life (animals, plants, fungi, and humans).

Additionally, reality is never still. Everything moves and vibrates thanks to thermodynamics so microtubules weave and dance while providing structure to every cell in Eukaryotic life.

The Orch OR theory

• The Orch OR theory proposes quantum computations in brain microtubules account for consciousness.
• Microtubule ‘quantum channels’ in which anesthetics erase consciousness are identified.
• Evidence for warm quantum vibrations in brain microtubules is cited.
• Interference of microtubule vibrations are ‘beat frequencies’ seen as EEG.
• Orch OR links consciousness to processes in fundamental space–time geometry.

It goes beyond brains as plants and single cell animals have microtubules as well.

Why has the 90's take of Penrose and Hameroff's Orch-Or been ignored?

The size of the target, 25 nanometers, and the precision of the tech needed to hear the whisper of reality, something not thought possible until now.

Penrose outlined a predecessor to Orch OR in The Emperor's New Mind, coming to the problem from a mathematical viewpoint and in particular Gödel's theorem, but it lacked a detailed proposal for how quantum processes could be implemented in the brain. Stuart Hameroff separately worked in cancer research and anesthesia, which gave him an interest in brain processes. Hameroff read Penrose's book and suggested to him that microtubules within neurons were suitable candidate sites for quantum processing, and ultimately for consciousness.[30][31] Throughout the 1990s, the two collaborated on the Orch OR theory, which Penrose published in Shadows of the Mind (1994).[19]

Hameroff's contribution to the theory derived from his study of the neural cytoskeleton, and particularly on microtubules.[31] As neuroscience has progressed, the role of the cytoskeleton and microtubules has assumed greater importance. In addition to providing structural support, microtubule functions include axoplasmic transport and control of the cell's movement, growth, and shape.[31]

Orch OR combines the Penrose–Lucas argument with Hameroff's hypothesis on quantum processing in microtubules. It proposes that when condensates in the brain undergo an objective wave function reduction, their collapse connects noncomputational decision-making to experiences embedded in spacetime's fundamental geometry. The theory further proposes that the microtubules both influence and are influenced by the conventional activity at the synapses between neurons.

• Researchers at the University of Chicago proposed a simple cavity QED method that can generate and control a wide range of highly entangled quantum states using standard laboratory tools and adjustable laser-driven energy offsets.

Building useful quantum technologies—from sensors to computers—requires generating highly complex entangled states, in which the properties of particles are deeply intertwined. Producing such states has traditionally required complex tools and carefully engineered setups with many parts.

Microtubuels are two state systems. 

Microtubules are made of subunits called tubulin. Each tubulin is made of an alpha and a beta-tubulin attached to each other. This, tubulin is a heterodimer.

In the cytoplasm, microtubules form a structural network. The function of the cytoskeleton 

in microtubule includes chromosomes segregation, transport, mobility and mechanical support. Microtubuels can either shrink or grow to generate energy which is due to the presence
of motor proteins that allow cellular components and others to be carried along with microtubules.

Cell Movement

Microtubules give structures to cilia and flagella. They also facilitate the contraction
and expansion of the cell helping them to move from one place to another.

Microtubules play a major role in forming the mitotic spindles. These mitotic spindles
organize and separate the chromosomes during cell division.

Microtubules aid the movement of organelles inside the cytoplasm of the cells.
They also help various areas of the cell to communicate with each other.

How  microtubuels actually work in conjunction with twisted light.

Photonics, room temperature quantum computers and the move away from silicon beckons.

Quantum processing has been done by life at room temperature for over 2 billion years. Proof? The bumblebee. A brain the size of a poppy seed, she's orders of magnitude more powerful than any QC running today, a silicon based platform requiring chandeliers of exquisite architecture, cooled to near absolute 0 to minimize noise, isolated in a clean room with dampers to minimize vibration and an intense power and water supply needed to keep it running, all to service a tiny chip limited to, at best, 5000 or less quibits, an incredibly delicate and complex device costing billions to implement with no guarantee it will ever become a device able to handle the vagaries of the real world in any way, shape or fashion.

From this writer's perspective, it makes no sense.

But first ... two things. 1. Microtubules are digital, a two bit device as described in this blurb. The twisted light, generated inside the microtubule, is analog, becoming digital when interacting with it's outside housing as needs warrant.  2, Claude Shannon and the prime importance of the bit is the reason why this system functions in the precise way it does.

Here we find our author/narrator, after six weeks of composition, fourteen chapters into the affair of a character who has however not yet been born. Tongue securely in cheek, Sterne, through the voice of Tristram, supplies his impatient reader a kind of apology -- or better to say, perhaps, an apology of a very curious yet, already by this stage of the proceedings, familiar and characteristic kind.

When a measurement is made and it causes one member of such a pair to take on a definite value (e.g., clockwise spin), the other member of this entangled pair will at any subsequent time[7] be found to have taken the appropriately correlated value (e.g., counterclockwise spin). Thus, there is a correlation between the results of measurements performed on entangled pairs, and this correlation is observed even though the entangled pair may have been separated by arbitrarily large distances.[8]

If this is the case, does time emerge from the quantum foam when protons, neutrons and all the rest of the subatomic zoo appear, entities well known to science to be subject to varying rates of decay without question. Additionally, can entanglement create a connect not only enabling two (or more)  particles to instantly "talk" to one another no matter how far apart they may be but also be able to generate the reality of time experienced by all parties existing in this part of the multiverse. 

Lastly, could the ER=EPR conjecture finally explain how gravity not only issues forth from the quantum foam but also how gravity, in the form of entangled wormholes, knits together a a reality we will never fully understand.

Resonance 2010

The new research ...

To resolve this problem, the researchers turned to a theory called the Page and Wootters mechanism. First proposed in 1983, the theory suggests that time emerges for one object through its quantum entanglement with another acting as a clock. For an unentangled system, on the other hand, time does not exist, and the system perceives the universe as frozen and unchanging.

By applying the Page and Wootters mechanism to two entangled but noninteracting theoretical quantum states — one a vibrating harmonic oscillator and the other a set of tiny magnets acting as a clock — the physicists found that their system could be perfectly described by the Schrödinger equation, which predicts the behavior of quantum objects. Yet, in place of time, their version of the famous equation ran according to the states of the tiny magnets acting as a clock. 

This insight is not new, but the team's next step was. They repeated their calculations twice, assuming first that the magnet clock and then the harmonic oscillator were macroscopic (larger) objects. Their equations simplified into those for classical physics, suggesting that time's flow is a consequence of entanglement even for objects on large scales.

As I have finally learned, equations are exquisitely configured to render valid thought experiments like the ones seen above, a process similar to how curiosity, passion and intuition drives the act of creation in other art forms no matter what shape the creative act takes. 

Science, done right, never disappoints. :)

The caterpillar ...

Back in 2012 and 2024, yours truly talked about wormholes in blurbs titled Entanglement, the journey to forever and A temporary arrangement discussing, in part, the brilliant ER=EPR conjecture written by Leonard Susskind and Juan Maldacena in 2013 explaining how entanglement happens via wormholes in the context that ... ER = EPR, a conjecture in physics stating that two entangled particles (a so-called Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen or EPR pair) are connected by a wormhole (or Einstein–Rosen bridge)[1][2] and is thought by some to be a basis for unifying general relativity and quantum mechanics into a theory of everything.[1]

Now it seems this notion of ER=EPR has legs based on the latest findings that
this radical take on reality just might be true.

For obvious reasons, we do not know what the inside of a black hole looks like. But thanks to theoretical physics, we can ask what the inside should look like if Einstein's theory of gravity and the rules of quantum mechanics are both true. A new study published in the journal Physical Review Letters has done exactly this by concentrating on two black holes that are deeply entangled (linked together by quantum rules).

The research by scientists from the U.S. and Argentina theoretically mapped the shared inner space between the two objects—the wormhole connecting them. They found that for a typical, messy entangled pair, the interior isn't the smooth tunnel of science fiction.

The ER caterpillar is a long, bumpy wormhole supported by an inhomogeneous matter distribution, with correlation scale set by ℓΔ and average length set by ℓ(t).

Instead, it's a long, lumpy structure they called the "Einstein-Rosen caterpillar." It's named after the Einstein-Rosen Bridge, the mathematical structure that connects two regions of spacetime, and "caterpillar" because of its bumpy, segmented shape. This discovery is a significant step toward proving that the bizarre rules of quantum mechanics can control the shape of spacetime inside a black hole.

This result supports the idea that two of the strangest concepts in physics (quantum entanglement and wormholes) are equivalent, or two sides of the same coin—the ER=EPR conjecture. The authors say, "The construction and main result of this Letter support a vastly more general form of ER = EPR and seem to be in some tension with arguments against semiclassicality of typical interiors."

The pix shows, in indirect fashion, how complementarity rules. In this composition, cold complements warmth and ice complements water, analogous to how nothing complements infinity and analog complementing digital because reality is believed to be woven together as a set of interconnected  complementary entities as per the ones described above. ER = EPR is a conjecture in physics stating that two entangled particles (a so-called Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen or EPR pair) are connected by a wormhole (or Einstein–Rosen bridge)[1][2] and is thought by some to be a basis for unifying general relativity and quantum mechanics into a theory of everything.[1]

So, what could cause this connect to be able to link two objects together instantaneously without regard to distance? As a total lay person not versed in math or physics in anyway, the take yours truly will take may be laughable but it's not totally crazed when one thinks about the quantum foam, a construct conceived by physicist John Wheeler to explain what space time would look like at the Planck length of 10-20 of a diameter of a proton. Seems the foam would not have space or time assigned to it as the foam is conjectured to consist of minuscule black holes winking in and out of existence at about 10-43 seconds, the time it takes for light to traverse the Planck distance of 10-20 of a diameter of a proton.

If this is the case, the question to ask is, does time exist in the quantum foam where only virtual particles issue forth and disappear according to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, thus precluding any chance of time happening in the foam as "real" protons, neutrons and all the rest of the subatomic zoo appear, AFAIK, to be temporary arrangements of the quantum foam subject to varying rates of decay, thus creating the illusion of time as seen in this part of the multiverse. If this is true, then, could the act of entanglement create a link consisting of, in some weird way, a "thread" akin to a wormhole of the quantum foam, forever separate from the constraints of time or the speed of light in enabling two (or more) linked particles to instantly "talk" to one another no matter how far apart they may be. Black holes/Wormholes evaporate and explode as per Stephen Hawking's brilliant conjecture that nothing is forever save for photons, gluons and gravitons as all three are massless and travel at the speed of light. As possible proof, we may have actually seen one explode.

What's also true is It from Bit arises whenever a black hole evaporates and explodes due to the participatory nature of existence. Also, the exact moment the transaction occurs is the blur, the infinitely thin speed of light/timeless entity enabling reality to complete the process of going from analog to digital in order to balance out the energy equation generated by the two entities in question. Think Day in the life when the rising indefinite analog pitch of the piece races to the ultimate, only to be firmly resolved by the finality of the E Major Chord for the ages.

Why timeless? Because the speed of light and the move from analog to digital demands it as S.O.L. is the both the exact blur of energy transitioning to matter, i.e. E =. MC2, and analog to digital. The vis versa bit applies because whenever an electron releases the digital photon, aka a quanta, the newly released photon, running in free space, becomes analog once again.

What is this? Being rather math challenged to the extreme, I asked Gemini to verify my explanation for the Einstein and Wheeler-DeWitt equations as I understand the first as C = light/Photon, a Boson, the force carrier particle equivalent to matter with the dividing line being the speed of light as that is the exact center point where the analog boson of light transitions into digital matter i.e. Photon transitions to a quanta to enter into the Electron. Think photoelectric effect to visualize why this is so. In effect, Einstein's equation depicts the analog to digital process from the energy side.

 

Note: Photons, gravitons and gluons travel at the speed of light.

As for Wheeler-DeWitt, it depicts the analog to digital transition as a balancing act, directly equivalent to Einstein in execution but different in application as it shows why the collapse of the wave function from analog to digital (decoherence) dissipates the energy of analog by transiting to digital. Think the E Major chord in Day in a Life - Sgt. Peppers and Yang & Yin as the two equations are complementary.

Fermat's principle states that the path taken by a ray between two given points is the path that can be traveled in the least time. The principle of least action deals with classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, particle physics, and general relativity.[1] where nature will also choose the most efficient path in going from point A to point B. Nature's lazy, never expending more energy than absolutely necessary to accomplish any given task. 0.57721 aka slippage, is also necessary as without it, existence would freeze up like a car engine without oil.
