Although not photorealistic at this time, but will be, one can produce sophisticated 3D environments by using text to drive Blender, a well respected open source 3D rendering engine.
Back in the day, yours truly created high res 3D fine art using Magi/Synthavision's FORTRAN based ray tracing software to create work back in the early 1980s as seen by the art below. Needless to say, the code generated by yours truly was rudimentary to say the least but getting said code to generate said art was anything but. :)
