If the army hadn't got me, I would have been a jazz composer in addition to being a performer. Playing jazz is the absolute best thing I have ever done as it's real time and thinking is not part of the equation. It's a zen thing where practice makes better. Keith Jarrett is a monster pianist, particularly when he does solo work. Unreal and a really good post BTW.

Thank you for your comment. I totally agree with what you say regarding counterculture and the impact it has had on our kids. The sixties rocked and my generation had a blast save for Nam and the consequences of that horrible war, something I fear is replicating itself in Iraq and Afghanistan. Then again, I've got a liar loan myself. Refinanced when I was starting up my solo practice and didn't have the income to qualify for the mortgage I wanted.

Just read Tom Geoghagen's excellent essay "Infinite Debt" in the April Harper's. He puts a lot of the blame on the repeal of usury laws in the 70's and 80's, which both shifted financial and intellectual capital into finance and out of manufacturing and also put many people on a treadmill of debt-based indentured servitude.

I agree but my post does not center on just tech as the only approach to solving any given problem nor have BRT posts in general have ever stated this. Most of the writings center on inquiries on why things are the way they are or findings about things that have social impact. I view myself as a Dave Bowman, a generalist who knows a little about a lot. I also am a strong believer in knowing the fundamentals about any given discipline, something that refers to tech (acceleration of same), because it has become an intrinsic fundamental that has to be factored in when discussing any social problem that needs to be fixed because society, in large part, is dependent on tech in order to function..

Why do people still use the same tired old cosmic ray + hawking radiation argument? The difference between cosmic rays and the LHC is cosmic rays are moving at near light speed and striking matter at relative rest. Anything they create would punch through the planet in a fraction of a second. Naturally occurring MBH's would be no danger.

The LHC could potentially create them at rest. If hawking radiation is not true (and there's a good chance that it is not, it is only a *theory*), then we'd be in for a bad time.
